Sangenjaya is an area in Setagaya, Tokyo. It’s not only convenient but also there are many things to do like shopping, event, festival, food, parks, etc! I’d love to introduce you of what you can enjoy there!
Sangenjaya / Sancha, Setagaya, Tokyo
Sangenjaya might be not a place for tourists, however, it might be a good idea to stay if you want to be closer to the center of Tokyo. I used to live in Sancha (people including myself call it like that), and i loved it!
Great Access
Shibuya
It’s very convenient because you can go to Shibuya easily. Only 1 stop by express, 2 stops by local train on the Denentoshi Line. That takes only around 5 minutes.
I’ve even walked from Shibuya to Sangenjaya that took me about 30 minutes.
Shinjuku
Also, if you’d like to go to Shinjuku, you can transfer to the JR Yamanote Line at Shibuya, and take only 3 stops from Shibuya.
Sangenjaya – Shibuya [ Tokyu Denentoshi Line ]
Shibuya – Shinjuku [ JR Yamanote Line ]
Tokyo Station
Tokyu Denentoshi Line is usually connected to the Tokyo Metro Hanzomon Line.
Sangenjaya – Shibuya [ Tokyu Denentoshi Line ]
(usually it’s direct, so you don’t need to transfer as long as it says “This train will merge and continue traveling on the Hanzomon line”)
Shibuya – Otemachi [ Tokyo Metro Hanzomon Line ]
Otemachi – Tokyo [ Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line] or You can walk to Tokyo station (it’s very close).
Restaurant, Shops, etc
There are many restaurants and cafes around Sangenjaya, also a lot of them are open until evening! There are some shops in the building named Carrot Tower which is connected to the station.
Also, there are shops around Sangenjaya such as
- Grocery Store : Tokyu, SEIYU, Hanamasa,
- Convenience Store : Seven Eleven, Lawson, Family mart
- Drugstore : Kokokara Fine, Tomod’s,
- 100 yen shop : Seria, Can Do,
- Discount shop : Don Quijote
I personally like the shop named “3 coins” located in Carrot tower. It’s 300 yen (330yen with tax) shop that you can find a lot of cute stuff! There are sometimes items that are not 300 yen, in that case it says so.
Chill at Setagaya Park
Walking for 10 minutes from Sangenjaya station, you can find this huge park! There is a fountain, a baseball field, tennis courts, archery range, skateboard park, pools, etc!
Peace Museum
Also, I visited Peace Museum (Heiwa Shiryo kan) where I saw a lot of things such as an actual cloth that Japanese military wore, a “part of” dress that was worn by a girl when she was exposed to radiation in Hiroshima, August 15th, 1945. Unfortunately, i couldn’t find any explanation in English, however, “seeing is believing”. It’s a good opportunity to learn.
Enjoyable for Kids
It’s a very nice place to take kids! There are a playground, pools, a part of SL that kids love.
Explore with Setagaya Line
Sangenjaya is a station on the Tokyu Denentoshi Line, but also on the Tokyu Setagaya Line. The very short trains are running there. They sell a one-day pass, so you can enjoy exploring the neighborhood of these station stops in Setagaya line.
Gotokuji Temple with Beckoning Cat in Tokyo – History, Opening Hours, Fee, Access, etc.
Go Up For a View from Carrot Tower
Carrot tower, i mentioned earlier, is directly connected to the Sangenjaya station. There are shops like Tokyu (Grocery store), 3 coins, KALDI, Flo (tart shop), TSUTAYA (bookstore), etc.
There is also a restaurant on the top where you can enjoy the view of the city! You can see the Tokyo Tower!
Enjoy Food in Sangenjaya
In my opinion as a foodie who is also a former resident of Sangenjaya, I think Sancha is one of the food heavens! There are still many restaurants, cafes, and food that I’d LOVE to try there!
Events in Sangenjaya
Festival : Taishido Yahata Jinja Shrine
On the 2nd Saturday on October, there is a festival at Taishido Yahata Jinja Shrine. This festival has over 1000 years of history..! Can you believe it?
You can walk on “Chazawa” dori Street from Sangenjaya station, and turn left at the corner of a huge gorilla statue on the top of the building. Then, you will see a small road full of venders there, following that street to the shrine.
Once you get the shrine, it might be a little bit difficult to walk because there are some spots being not flat, so be careful especially if you are pregnant, with kids, etc.
It’s a festival that is loved and cherished by local people.
Pan Matsuri (Bread Festival)
Pan (bread) Matsuri (festival) is taken a place at Setagaya Park. It’s very popular and you should know that there will be a lot of people.
Setagaya Boro Ichi (Market)
Only 4 days in a year, December 15th, 16th, January 15th, and 16th, they have a festival in Kamimachi (5 stops from Sangenjaya on the Setagaya Line). It was started as an open air market called “Raku-ichi” in 1578. After the Meiji era, it went to open those 4 days as same as today.
It’s a bit away from Sangenjaya, but it’s nice to visit if you are interested in.
Sangenjaya might be not a place for tourists, however, I think you can enjoy a lot of things to do if you stay around.
