Okonomiyaki – Hiroshima Style
Okonomiyaki might be one of well known Japanese foods in the world! I’ve seen Okonomiyaki on the menu at Japanese restaurants in New York City, San Diego, L.A., Gold Coast (Australia) etc.
The feature of Hiroshima Okonomiyaki is a layer style, Thin-dough, cabbages (other veggies like bean sprout), sliced pork, noodle, egg, and sauce on top. It is very different from Osaka style Okonomiyaki which they mix all ingredients together before cooking.
Best Okonomiyaki Restaurant in Hiroshima
Micchan
Micchan is a very famous Okonomiyaki restaurant. There was a line before it opens when I went there. They have a lot of things on the menu. We ordered “Special” and “Niku soba tamago (standard) + Koune topping”. Koune is pork shoulder meat, also well eaten food in Hiroshima,
Hassho
Hassho is also one of well known Okonomiyaki restaurants in Hiroshima. At Hassho, their menu is very simple.
We ordered Nikusoba Tamago which includes Pork + Veggies + Egg + Chinese Noodle/Udon. You can add some toppings if you like.
Onomichi Ramen – Hiroshima’s Local Ramen
Onomichi Ramen is Hiroshima’s most famous local ramen. It’s from Onomichi city, Hiroshima.
The soup is soy sauce based with chicken broth, and broth from small fishes (depending on shop though). It is clear and light, but also they put backfat to make it deep taste. Noodle is middle width and straight, also Chashu (pork), green onion, Menma (bamboo shoot).
It is well-balanced with light soup and depth and greasiness of backfat.
Onomichi Ramen Tani, Onomichi, Hiroshima
I had a bowl of Onomichi Ramen at restaurant “Onomichi Ramen Tani” that is located close to the Onomichi Station, Hiroshima. I expected that would be greasy, but it was quite light!
Kaki (Oyster) – Produced a Lot in Hiroshima
Oysters are very famous in Hiroshima, the most number of Oysters are coming from Hiroshima, and it is about 63%! Absolutely my favorite food from Hiroshima, and i love it so much!
There are some shops that you can eat raw oysters but only specific season, also they grill or steam it if you want. I am Japanese and have been eating raw fish since i was little, but for some people it might be scary to have a stomachache or some problems to eat raw oysters. In case of that, you can get grilled or steamed one.
Oyster at Kakiya in Miyajima Island
I had a grilled oyster at Kakiya, Miyajima island. It’s very flavorful without any seasoning! The oyster itself was really good! I loved it!!
Anago Meshi – Conger Eel + Rice from Miyajima
In Miyajima (Itsukushima) island, Hiroshima, you can have a great Anago (Conger Eels). It is related to oyster, actually. Here is a system, Oysters get out some mud from their body, and it goes down to the ground where small fishes, crabs and shrimps like to live. And Conger eels come to eat them, so that there are a lot of conger eels in Miyajima.
You can find an Anago Meshi which they grill conger eels, cover it with an original sauce, and put them over rice.
I personally don’t eat it that much since i like raw fish like Sashimi, it could change my mind once i try it there in Miyajima! Can’t wait to visit there again and try it.
Anagomeshi at Fujitaya, Miyajima Island
Fujitaya had started their business in 1902. Now one of famous Anagomeshi restaurant in Miyajima island that got Michelin 1 star.
Be noted that there are small bones that might be hard for you to eat. My husband American) said that one of bones got stuck on his throat.
Momiji Manju – Miyajima’s Famous Sweet
In 1906, Tsunesuke Takatsu invented this sweet called Momiji Manju in Miyajima, Hiroshima. This is one of typical sweet such as I assume it comes up on mind for people when thinking about souvenir from Hiroshima.
Momiji = Maple (leaf)
There is Anko (red beans paste) inside, and it is like cake-sponge outside.
Today, they have Momiji Manju with Matcha cream, chestnuts cream, chocolate cream, custard cream, etc so that people who doesn’t eat Anko also eat them.

Takatsudo – Invented Momiji Manju
Takatsudo is the first shop which had made the Momiji manju in 1906. Their main store is located in Miyajimaguchi area (7 minutes away from Miyajimaguchi station). I also bought a box of them at the store in front of Hiroshima station.
Yamadaya – Freshly Cooked Momiji Manju
At Yamadaya on the Miyajima Omotesando Street, they start making one by one after they get an order.
Momijido – Deep-Fried Momiji Manju
Momijido has a deep fried momiji manju. They start deep-frying once they get an order. I think it feels sweeter by deep frying.
Be careful, it’s hot..
