Osaka is known for delicious foods! I know a bit better about Osaka since I grew up in Osaka. There are many foods that are famous and popular and you should try there such as Takoyaki which is very signature food, Okonomiyaki, Kushikatsu, Butaman, and more! Let’s find Must Try Food in Osaka!
Takoyaki
Takoyaki is one of most famous foods in Osaka! And some of you have eaten it at restaurant in other countries.
I have many memories about Takoyaki, such as I had them outside with my friends, my dad brought it back home, I made this at home with friends, and so on!
I highly recommend you to try it! You can have it at restaurant, also buy it as a to go, too!
Okonoyamiyaki
Hiroshima prefecture is famous for Okonomiyaki, but also Osaka is known for that too. The style is very different like they mix all ingredients together before cooking in Osaka style, but on the other hand, they cook each one and pile it up in Hiroshima.
You can eat Osaka style Okonomiyaki in almost everywhere in Japan, but it’s great to have them in Osaka 🙂
Kushikatsu
Kushikatsu is fried food in stick covered by Panko (bread crumbs). There are vegetable one, seafood, meat, or anything!
The rule that you MUST follow is, you can dip in sauce ONLY ONCE before you bite!
Butaman by 551 HORAI
Butaman is a (big) pork bun, that also called “Niku man”.
Buta = Pig (Pork)
Niku = Meat
551 HORAI is famous and popular Butaman from Osaka, it is very juicy inside and fluffy outside.
A lot of people including myself buy it as a snack or souvenirs before leaving Osaka.
Puffer Fish
Puffer fish is called “Fugu” in Japanese, and Fugu dishes have been eaten in Western Japan.
The most famous place to fish Fugu is Yamaguchi Prefecture though, 60% of Fugu is eaten in Osaka.
Fugu Sashi = Puffer Fish Sashimi
Fugu Sashi(mi) is sliced very thin since it is chewy. It needs to be fresh, and you cannot find “many” places that you can eat Fugu Sashi in Japan. It would be a good opportunity to try them.
Tecchiri = Puffer Fish Hot Pot
Tecchiri means Puffer Fish Hot Pot in Osaka. If you want to try Fugu but not as raw, this might be your choice.
Kasu Udon Noodle
It is from Minami Kawachi area, Osaka.
Kasu means Abura Kasu in Osaka, which is fried offal. It sounds greasy, but they fry it until a fat get out, and it gets crispy outside.
Some people like to eat it after drinking alcohol before going back home.
Doteni / Doteyaki
Doteni / Doteyaki is a simmered dish with offals, Daikons (Japanese Radish), carrots, and etc. seasoned with Miso and Mirin.
It’s rich taste of miso and offal. Good match with Sake.

The cheese cake at Rikuro’s is AMAZING! I actually have eaten a lot growing up!
It is so fluffy, but rich taste! 🧀💖
They sell only a whole cake not a piece but it is cheap around $7. You should try it if you like cheese cake!
Kintsuba
The origin of Kintsuba is Osaka, which is anko (red beans) inside covered with dough made by flour.
It was named “Gintsuba” although they changed it to “Kintsuba” after it went to Edo (Tokyo) from Osaka in 1600s since they thought “Kin” is better than “Gin”.
Gin = Silver
Kin = Gold
It was round shape before, but now it is square.
I just get so craving for all those foods above as I’m writing this. And it brings me back many of my memories. I DO wish you try a lot of foods in Osaka and you’d love it 😉
