In other country, you might be nervous not to do something breaking rules. Japan has some street rules about eating, drinking ( plus alcohol), garbage, smoking, manner for pet, and so on.
Eating
Usually you should not eat on the street especially with walking. But you can eat some food in front of shop that you buy it.
It is not strict for some places for “Tabe aruki (たべあるき) which means “eat + walk”.
Drinking
You can drink a beverage on the street in Japan, just don’t stop in the middle, and go aside not to bother someone.
Alcohol
You can also drink alcohol in Japan as same as other beverage if you are 20+ years old. Many people from other countries are surprised by this, and also i got surprised that it is not OK in Gold Coast (QLD, Australia), and New York City (USA) when i started living there.
Garbage
It is very clean on the street in Japan even though you barely find garbage cans.
You can usually find a garbage cans on the train station, in front of convenience store (you can throw something you bought there), and some parks.
If you cannot find any garbage cans, it is a manner to bring it home with you.
Walking on the right side
In japan, you need to walk on the right side either there is sidewalk or not.
Don’t stop
Don’t stop on the middle of the street to take pictures, look at map, use your phone, or something like that.
Also you shouldn’t walk on the Braille block which is for people with disabilities such as blind.
Smoking
You can smoke only specific place. Usually, around the station ( outside of station ), in front of some stores like cigarettes shop. convenience store, and outside of bars/restaurants (these are for their customers ).
Some city/ward/prefecture have strict rules which you could be fined for smoking at places not smoking area, or smoking and walking at the same time.
Pet pee/poop
You should go aside for letting your pet pee and poop, and pick up your pet’s poop.
