Komachi street is very close to Kamakura station, Kanagawa. It’s one street inside from the main street straight ahead Tsuruoka Hachimangu Shrine which is one of most famous sightseeing spots in Kamakura.

Grilled squid from Kamakura Wasen

Grilled squid from Kamakura Wasen - Street food on Komachi Street in Kamakura

Kamakura Wasen has great seafood. You can dine-in, of course. Also, they grill seafood in front of the shop. They have fish, squid, shrimp, scallop, etc.

I ordered a grilled squid, they started grilling after I ordered. The squid was very tender, a little bit chewy but you can cut it with your teeth easily.

There might be a line, also you need to wait for your order to be cooked, but it’s worth to wait, if you like seafood!

Daibutsu (Buddha) yaki from Tomoya - Street food on Komachi Street in Kamakura

Kamakura is known for the great Buddha (you can find the statue in Kotoku in temple in Hase, Kamakura. Tomoya has Daibutsu (Buddha) shaped snack. It’s similar to Ningyo yaki which is Japanese sweet made of soft dough (it’s like a pancake) and filling. There are many options for filling,

  • Anko (red bean paste)
  • custard cream
  • purple sweet potato paste
  • Anko x cream cheese
  • blueberry x cream cheese
  • bacon x cheese

We ordered

  • Anko (red bean paste)
  • Custard

It’s very fluffy outside, and it matches with the filling very well. Be cautious for the inside is very hot.

We got

  • Kamakura Croquette

Both are very crispy because of them wrapped with a little big pieces of Panko. The inside of Kamakura croquette is smooth mashed potato + tiny pieces of beef.

They also have Kamakura beers.

Karaage is Japanese style fried chicken. It’s perfect for when you want something savory.

When I bought 4 pieces, they gave me a very fresh ones, that are very hot. Each piece was quite big, that you need to bite for a couple of times.  juicy! The package is cute, too.

Matcha Soft Served Ice Cream from Kamakura Cha Cha

Matcha Soft Served Ice Cream from Kamakura Cha Cha - Street food on Komachi Street in Kamakura

They have matcha ice creams in many different levels of richness (bitterness). Some people try some of them.  Or you can also get a soft served ice cream. We had a premium soft served.

It’s served with matcha powder on top, that is easy to be flown away if it’s windy.

The soft served has a real taste of Matcha (not too sweet) and the powder adds more richness. If you don’t like real matcha which is bitter, you might like less-richness one.

Kamakura Yaki from Arbre Noir Yakumi

Kamakura Yaki from Arbre Noir Yakumi - Street food on Komachi Street in Kamakura

One street aside from Komachi Street, you can find Arbre Noir Yakumi. They sell Kamakura yaki, which is similar to “Imagawa yaki”, made of green tea flavored dough and Goma (sesame) paste inside.

It’s very small, (smaller than normal Imagawa yaki), however, you can enjoy the great smell and combination of black sesame and green tea.

It’s enjoyable both visually and tasty!

Dango is chewy, be careful when feeding kids/elderly dangos not to choke.

Mason Cacao is for someone who loves chocolate! My husband who is a chocolate lover, wanted to go to this place for their chocolate tart.

We got,

  • Chocolate Eclair
  • Chocolate Tart

The chocolate inside the tart is very rich taste and aroma of chocolate. It’s diffidently for chocolate lovers!

About the eclair, there is a chocolate whip cream and a thin chocolate bar between the puffs. You can enjoy the different textures from the cream, chocolate bar, and puff.

They sell some boxes of sweet, that might be a great souvenir.

This is not exactly “on” the Komachi street, but let me introduce Kamakura’s famous snack, Hato (pigeon) sable.

It’s a sable shaped like a pigeon, that has great smell of butter. Well-known as Kamakura’s famous sweet. I remember that I bought some for my family and grandparents as souvenir when I visited Kamakura as school trip when I was in elementary school.

They also have other Japanese sweets, that are very detailed and beautiful. Check it out if you have time.

Their main shop is located nearby.

Enjoying Street Food on Komachi Street

I’d write some stuff that might help you enjoy street food on Komachi street.

What You Need To Know; Rules & Manners

For everyone who wants to know what you need to know before going. I’d say, try to make sure to follow rules and manners;

  • No littering (bring back the garbage to where you buy it or home)
  • Check where you can eat at. Same for smoking (usually not on the street)
  • Do not stop suddenly when walking to avoid any troubles with other people
  • Do not stop in the middle of the street (especially where the car could drive by)

Those below are just advice from me,

  • Leave huge belongings at your hotel, station, coin locker, etc. not to drug them around in the crowds.
  • Go to the bathroom when you can (maybe at station, or at restaurant if you purchase/dine-in)

What Time You Should Go to Komachi Street?

First of all, most of stores/shops open around 10-11 am, and close at 5-6 p.m.

If you think you’d eat something for lunch, it’s better to go before noon to avoid the crowds. For snack, anytime might be fine, but I’d go til 4pm.

What to Bring

Here are some things that I’d bring when enjoying street foods.

  • Cash (some places only accept cash)
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Wipes / tissues
  • Small plastic bag for putting your garbage
  • Reusable bag for shopping if needed
