Enoshima

Looking for an easy family-friendly day trip from Tokyo?

As a local mom, Enoshima is one of my favorite places to visit with a baby or toddler. Between the beach, aquarium, ocean views, and family-friendly restaurants, it’s easy to enjoy a relaxing half-day outing without feeling rushed.

My son first visited Enoshima Aquarium when he was just 6 months old, and we’ve returned several times as he’s grown. Here’s the itinerary that has worked best for our family.

Before You Go to Enoshima with Babies / Toddlers

  • Recommended Age: 0–5 years old
  • Stroller Friendly: Yes
  • Rainy Day Friendly: Yes (thanks to the aquarium)
  • Budget: $$
  • Time Needed: 3–5 hours

Why Enoshima Is Great for Families

Enoshima is one of the easiest day trips from Tokyo with young children.

Here are a few reasons why we keep coming back:

  • Easy access from Tokyo by train
  • A world-class aquarium
  • Beautiful beaches and ocean views
  • Plenty of stroller-friendly areas
  • Family-friendly restaurants within walking distance
  • A relaxed atmosphere compared to central Tokyo

We usually drive, but Katase-Enoshima Station is located just a short walk from the beach and aquarium, making it convenient for families traveling by train.

Half-Day Itinerary

  • 9:00–9:45 AM — Relax at Katase Nishihama Beach
  • 10:00–12:00 PM — Explore Enoshima Aquarium
  • 12:00 PM — Lunch Near the Aquarium

Katase Nishihama Beach

Before heading to the aquarium, we like to spend a little time by the beach.

It helps toddlers burn off some energy and gives everyone a chance to enjoy the ocean views before going indoors.

Depending on your child’s age, you can sit on the steps overlooking the beach, walk along the sand, collect shells, or simply enjoy the sea breeze.

Why We Love It

Starting the day outdoors helps our son settle into the outing.

By the time we arrive at the aquarium, he’s usually calmer and ready to focus on the exhibits.

The beach also provides beautiful views of Enoshima and Mount Fuji on clear days.

Local Mom Tips

The sun can be very strong, especially during spring and summer.

Don’t forget:

  • Sunscreen
  • Hats
  • Hat clips
  • Water bottles
  • A change of clothes

Even if your child isn’t planning to play in the water, toddlers somehow always find a way to get sandy.

Enoshima Aquarium

Enoshima Aquarium

Enoshima Aquarium is one of our favorite aquariums in Japan.

My son first visited when he was 6 months old, and we’ve returned multiple times since then.

Because we purchased an annual pass, we were able to experience the aquarium at different developmental stages.

Our Experience at Different Ages

6 Months Old

He mostly watched the fish from his stroller and seemed fascinated by the movement and colors.

8 Months Old

The jellyfish exhibits became a favorite. He would follow them with his eyes and watch them drift around the tanks.

11 Months Old

This was when he started pointing excitedly at sea creatures and reacting more actively to what he saw.

18 Months Old

Once he started walking confidently, exploring the aquarium became a completely different experience. He enjoyed moving from exhibit to exhibit and choosing what he wanted to see next.

Stroller or Baby Carrier?

The aquarium is stroller-friendly, so either option works well.

When our son was younger, we usually brought both a stroller and a baby carrier.

Once he started walking, we mostly relied on a baby carrier.

Local Mom Tip

Some areas of the aquarium are quite dark. If your child is sensitive to dark environments, a baby carrier may feel more reassuring than a stroller. Being close to a parent can help nervous little ones feel more comfortable.

What to Bring for Your Child

We usually pack:

  • Water bottle or straw cup
  • Snacks
  • Diapers and wipes
  • Change of clothes

Local Mom Tip

If you’d rather not carry everything around the aquarium, coin lockers are available. We put bags on the stroller, but also we left some stuff in the car.

Check Show Times Before You Go

If you’d like to see the dolphin show or other seasonal events, check the schedule before your visit.

Show times vary throughout the year and can affect how you plan your day.

Diaper Changing and Nursing Facilities

There are two baby-care areas inside the aquarium.

We usually use the private baby-care room near the first-floor exit.

The area is decorated with dolphins, penguins, and other sea creatures, making it feel welcoming and child-friendly.
