Make a Reservation

I walked in at 6 pm, but i could get seated. It got all taken after us + 3 groups, and it had been packed until we left. It looked like there are more locals than tourists.

What To Order at So-ya

Sashimi / Raw Fish

Kumamoto Best Restaurant : So-ya

There are some Sashimi plates, and i ordered the biggest one. 3 kinds of fish + squid. Guess how much this is.. it’s about 1,400 yen!

In addition, they asked us if we wanted them to cook with fish head and squid tentacles. They grilled squid tentacles, and made miso soup with fish head (as broth). It’s nice to enjoy food to the fullest.

Fresh Raw Oysters

Kumamoto Best Restaurant : So-ya

Can you believe that it costs only 100yen per one oyster. It’s not big, however it’s tasty! They put Ponzu, Momiji Oroshi (Daikon reddish) and green onion on it. It might be different price due to market price.

Karashi Renkon / Mustard Lotus Root

Kumamoto Best Restaurant : So-ya

One of Kumamoto’s specialities, Karashi Renkon.

Karashi = (Japanese) Mustard

Renkon = Lotus Root

Usually, they put Karashi between slices of Renkon, and it’s spicy because you can taste Karashi well. However, at So-ya, they mix chopped Renkon with Karashi, make a ball, and fry it. I like this style better because you don’t taste the spiciness of mustard that much.

How To Access To So-ya

It takes 2-3 minutes by foot from Toorichosuji station.

For me, it’s surprisingly cheap for this quality of food! You can also enjoy the sweet shoyu (soy sauce) which is Kyushu speciality.
